Si je t’oublie maman

Si je t’oublie, ô ! maman,
Que ma main droite m’oublie !
Ton amour brave le temps
Ta bonté est établie.

Maman, ma chère maman,
Tes yeux ont versé des larmes,
Ton cœur fut blessé souvent,
Mais il a gardé son charme.

Tu m’as porté en ton sein.
Ma santé était fragile,
Mais jamais tu ne t’es plaint.
Tu as agi en vigile.

Tu n’as pas appris à lire,
Tu n’as jamais su écrire,
Mais si j’ai étudié,
C’est grâce à ton radier.

Tu as bravé la souffrance,
Pour faire de moi un homme.
Sans ton amour, mon enfance
N’aurait pas connu d’arôme.

Seigneur, bénis ma maman
Du haut de ton firmament !
Entoure-la de ta grâce,
Fais briller sur elle ta face.

Si je t’oublie, ô ! maman,
Que mon bras aille au vent !
Je pense à toi maman
Car ton amour est vivant.

  1. Very nice poem for your mother. If she can’t read, Moussa, does that mean that you had to translate it into Mofa for her? Or does she speak French despite never going to school?

  2. Good question Peter. Of course, I translated the poem from French into Mofa for her with all the beauty and music of orality. While doing it, I discovered that mother tongues are the best as far as the expression of feelings is concerned. Maybe I will write a whole poetry book in Mofa or Fulfulde someday but I am afraid you will not be able to read it … So, let us continue to dance with borrowed legs because, at least, we are dancing together.
